Hotel energy consumption and CO₂e: what is the difference?

What the bill records and what the calculation produces

An electricity invoice can provide energy consumed in kWh. That is activity data, not an emissions figure. Water in m³ and fuel in litres are other examples of data requiring their own treatment.

CO₂e means carbon dioxide equivalent: a way to express different greenhouse gases in a common unit. Reporting consumption and reporting emissions are related tasks, but they are not interchangeable. Always label the quantity next to the value.

How activity data relates to an emission factor

A simple estimate multiplies an activity quantity by a compatible factor. Units must cancel correctly: kWh multiplied by kg CO₂e/kWh gives kg CO₂e. Check conversions between kilograms and tonnes too.

Teaching example only: 10,000 kWh × 0.20 kg CO₂e/kWh = 2,000 kg CO₂e, or 2 t CO₂e. The factor 0.20 is fictional. It does not represent Portugal, a supplier or a year and must not be used in a real report.

• Source and version of the factor.
• Geography, period and activity covered by that factor.
• Original unit and any conversions.
• Chosen method and limitations of the result.

Why this total may not be the hotel’s footprint

Calculating electricity-related emissions does not cover every activity at a hotel. Before calling the result a carbon footprint, define the boundary and identify included and excluded sources. Label a subtotal as a subtotal.

Flag missing information. When an estimate is needed, document the assumption and why it was chosen. Mixing verified records and estimates without distinguishing them makes review harder and may imply more precision than the work supports.

How to answer an environmental data request

Provide the figure with its period, property, method, factor references and limitations. Link activity data to original documents. The recipient can then understand what was measured and what was calculated.
